I read this article about how people should minimize their usage of Sunscreen!!!
Reports are now coming out saying that people are overusing their sunscreen, and avoiding going in the sun – because as good healthy people we are – we want to avoid too much sun exposure which causes the dreaded skin cancer (G-d forbid). So for years now, our magazines and media have been hounding us with warnings of sun damage, and how we must must must use sunscreen and DO NOT TAN!!!!! I remember seeing an advertisement for a cute little t-shirt that said “Pale is the new tan.” This whole widespread propaganda to get it into our brains that the SUN IS DANGEROUS!!!!! (ps – id like to point out that there a still stupid ass morons out there who insist on lying out in the sun just to keep up their immaculate tan… and are proving their stupidity in the process… but I digress :))
Well guess what people? Studies and dermatologists are now talking about how people have gone overboard with their fear of the sun, being extreme not to hang out outside in the rays, and wearing sunscreen continuously – which is actually reducing the amounts of vitamin D a person’s body is able to make. Experiments showed that by the end of the summer, people who lathered it up were actually more deficient of this very important Vitamin – even WITH taking a Vitamin D supplement, their levels were still insufficient.
Can you believe that? First they tell us to overload on the sunscreen – and now they tell us that the sunscreen is causing us to be deficient in the Vitamin D category. (For those of you who are unaware of the importance of Vitamin D to someone’s health – you must must Google it!!) In any case, now they want you to take a Vitamin D supplement – and not so be scared of the sun! Although they still feel we shouldn’t be tanning and baking in the solar rays, it’s still vital that we get good sunshine – preferably after peak hours (11 am – 3 pm being the time when the sun is the strongest.) OF course, now everyone is freaking out…. “how much sun do I need?” and “how much vitamin D do I need?” and “is it possible to take too much vitamin D?” and overall, people are just so darn confused!
So why do I find this absolutely hysterically funny? Because, simply, we have become so screwed up in our thinking! (excuse my harsh language… I guess you wouldn’t want to know which term I REALLY wanted to use) … we have gotten so lost in the way we view a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Everything in our society has become so industrialized and institutionalized. Everything is a pill, or a drug, a chemical. The way we deal with our illnesses – with quick fixes of antibiotics and overmedicating. The way we eat –fast foods, caffeine, sugary snacks. Even our exercise and our attitudes towards it – the whole gym industry has become a market getting people to shell out hundreds of dollars on memberships, getting people to work out in their gym – for what purpose? To get as thin as possible…
I could go on … I should go on. Each of these items is blog worthy in of itself (I guess if this blog lasts long enough I’ll cover each of these items eventually :)). My point ultimately is that our lives have very little balance. We find ourselves constantly bouncing from one extreme to the other. Either we bake in the sun till we’re burnt to a crisp… or we avoid the sun like the plague, smother ourselves with thick sunscreen SPF 75 and cover up with hats, sunglasses and long sleeves. Either we crash diet and swear off all carbs (or fats, or calories), or we binge and eat every chocolate and potato chip in sight. Am I the only one who sees something wrong with this picture? (I didn’t think so)
So therefore my friends, it was very refreshing and always fun to get a good hearty chuckle from the news story. It’s nice to be reminded that as long as we keep the healthy balance in our lives, from the way we eat, to the way we exercise, and even to the way we get some sunshine, we’ll live long, happy, healthy and productive lives. (well, I cant promise on the healthy and productive part – but I can guarantee the long and healthy part 🙂 :))
